Has iPhone 5 eroded Apple’s loyal customer base?

Has iPhone 5 eroded Apple's loyal customer base?Ever since Apple debuted its first iPhone in 2007, the number of iPhone loyalists, who say that they definitely or probably will buy the next iPhone, has plummeted. According to a recent Strategy Analytics Wireless Device Lab Report, only 75 per cent of iPhone owners in Western Europe say they are likely to buy their next phone from Apple, down from 88 per cent in 2011.

US repeat purchase intentions have also seen a slight decline, down from 93 per cent in 2011 to 88 per cent in 2012, said the report. The figures have come almost a month after Apple launched its latest iPhone 5.

“There is no doubt that Apple is continuing its success in retaining existing user base while attracting new customers,” commented Paul Brown, director at Strategy Analytics’ User Experience Practice, adding, “negative press prompted by a perceived lack of recent innovation by Apple has meant we are starting to see some growth in the number of previously highly loyal consumers who are now reconsidering whether or not they will purchase a new iPhone for their next device.”

More iPad Mini evidence spotted in app logs

The search for evidence of an upcoming iPad Mini has become worthy of a plot line for one of those forensic investigation shows that make forensic investigation seem a lot more sexy than it surely is.
The latest lead in the case of an Apple slate with a smaller form factor comes in the form of some interesting entries in Instapaper’s logs that show devices calling themselves “iPad2,5″ and “iPad2,6″ accessed the app recently. The most recent 16GB iPad2 now on the market identifies as iPad2,4 when the device interacts with an app.
Marco Arment, developer of the text reader and bookmarking app, speculates that the previously unseen device identifiers could be new GSM or CDMA versions of iPad2,4, but more likely they’re the rumored smaller iPad that could be based on the second-generation iPad.

13-inch Retina MacBook Pro displays in production

“The supply chain indications are that it’s for a MacBook Pro 13.3 — not a MackBook Pro,” said Shim.

Displays are being made by Samsung, LGD, and Sharp, he said.

Shim said that production volume is expected to be substantially higher out of the gate compared to the current 15.4-inch Retina MacBook Pro.

“With 15.4 it’s production of a few hundred thousand units versus one to two million for the 13.3,” he said. That 13.3-inch production began in the third quarter.

He also said the volume depends on production yield rates. “It depends on how the yield rates turn out. If the yield rates are really good and they’re at 70, 80, 90 percent, then they’ll probably be in the million and a half range,” he said.

Microsoft denies Windows 8 app spying via SmartScreen

Microsoft has moved to quell fears that Windows 8 is building up a detailed record of all applications stored on client machines via its SmartScreen application.

An analysis by security researcher Nadim Kobeissi noticed a potential privacy violation in Windows 8′s SmartScreen system, which checks applications that the user wants to install against a database of known dodgy co

The big problem is that Windows 8 is configured to immediately tell Microsoft about every app you download and install,” Kobeissi wrote. “This is a very serious privacy problem, specifically because Microsoft is the central point of authority and data collection/retention here and therefore becomes vulnerable to being served judicial subpoenas or National Security Letters intended to monitor targeted users.”

To make matters worse, the install logs are sent to Microsoft and can be snooped by third-parties, the researcher claims, since the mechanism supports the SSLv2 protocol which is known to be breakable. While it’s possible to turn off SmartScreen, it’s not easy, and the OS will remind you periodically to turn it back on.

The thought of Microsoft getting a log of every application stored on a client system predictably got some in the IT community’s hackles up. Stories like this elicit fears in some quarters that all the data is fed back to a secret room in Redmond, where it is examined by the FBI, RIAA, or the Rand Corporation, in conjunction with the saucer people, under the supervision of the reverse vampires.

“We can confirm that we are not building a historical database of program and user IP data,” a spokesperson told El Reg. “Like all online services, IP addresses are necessary to connect to our service, but we periodically delete them from our logs. As our privacy statements indicate, we take steps to protect our users’ privacy on the backend. We don’t use this data to identify, contact or target advertising to our users and we don’t share it with third parties.”

As for concerns over the leakage of material via SSLv2.0, Microsoft said that it will not use this protocol with Windows 8 and that SmartScreen does not support that version. Kobeissi notes that 14 hours after he posted about the issue a new scan of the servers showed no SSlv2 support, although he stands by his original findings.

de and warns the user if Redmond’s records suggest there may be a problem.

Microsoft rolls out first new logo in 25 years

Microsoft's new logo is seen in a handout photo. Microsoft Corp unveiled its first new logo in 25 years on Thursday as it looks to unify its branding ahead of a clutch of new product releases this year. REUTERS/Microsoft/HandoutThe world’s largest software company is introducing a dash of color in its first logo redesign since 1987, using a new multi-colored square next to a plain rendering of its name, replacing its well-worn italic style logo.

Microsoft is rolling out its new Windows 8 operating system along with new Office and phone software this autumn, and is hoping the new logo unifies customers’ experience of the company, much like rival Apple Inc’s distinctive logo has for its consumers.

“It’s been 25 years since we’ve updated the Microsoft logo and now is the perfect time for a change,” said Jeff Hansen, general manager of Microsoft’s brand strategy, in a blog on Microsoft’s website. “This wave of new releases is not only a reimagining of our most popular products, but also represents a new era for Microsoft, so our logo should evolve to visually accentuate this new beginning.”

The new design, which resembles the existing logo for Windows, its most important product, is already in use on Microsoft’s website and is being unveiled at its latest store opening in Boston on Thursday.

Weak Sales and a Large Write-Down Give HP a Loss

Ms. Whitman is trying to transform Hewlett-Packard, the company she runs, for a world where its historical dominance in personal computers and printers matters less. The new businesses involve more smartphones, software and big data centers, where H.P. has less presence. She and others agree this will take years, but before that, the company may start to run into the harsh realities of creating growth amid long-term decline.

On Wednesday, H.P. reported shrinking revenue in its fiscal third quarter, lower sales in all of its major businesses, and a large net loss associated with accounting write-downs from layoffs and an unsuccessful acquisition.

While Ms. Whitman has rebuilt H.P.’s balance sheet somewhat from the lows of previous quarters, she forecast dim near-term prospects for personal computers and printers, which were once H.P.’s most important cash-generating businesses.

“This is a big ship to turn. I feel pressure every day,” Ms. Whitman said in an interview on Wednesday after the company announced its results. “We have to turn around the sales trajectory on our products.”

She added, however, that she did not think H.P. was in as dire shape as I.B.M. was in 1993, when it lost more than $15 billion in three years. “We are making money,” she said. “Personal computing is not dead. Printing is not in decline across the board.”

The company reported that revenue dropped 10 percent in its PC business and 3 percent in printers from the same quarter last year. Unit sales of printers fell 23 percent. Ms. Whitman said this was part of a conscious decision to move away from relatively low-value customers.

Over all, H.P. reported a net loss in its third fiscal quarter of $8.9 billion, or $4.49 a share, largely because of a major write-off in the value of its Electronic Data Systems unit. Revenue fell 5 percent to $29.7 billion. In the year-ago quarter, the company reported net income of $1.9 billion, or 93 cents a share, on revenue of $31.2 billion.

HTC lose for $40 in OnLive ‘restructuring’

HTC will have to book a $40 (£25m) loss due to its investment in the cloud gaming service OnLive, the Taiwanese handset-maker said on Monday.

Although it also has a sideline in hosted desktop delivery, OnLive is best-known for providing on-demand gaming through the cloud, allowing PC-quality games to be delivered to devices such as tablets and even smartphones.

HTC bought into OnLive in February 2011, but now OnLive has applied for what it called ‘asset restructuring’, shortly after key competitor Gaikai got bought by Sony for $380m.

“Due to lack of operating cash and an inability to raise new capital, OnLive had completed asset restructuring over the weekend. HTC estimates that it will need to recognize a $40m [£25m] provision for this investment loss,” an HTC statement read.

OnLive’s restructuring has proven somewhat contentious, as it effectively destroyed the equity held in the company by long-serving employees and investors — including HTC.

The cloud gaming service was not the only iffy investment made by HTC in recent times. Last year it also ploughed $300m into the headphones outfit Beats Electronics, only to sell back half of that stake this July.

Microsoft cures ‘hiccup’ that stopped Windows Phone apps installing

The company called a halt to publishing on Tuesday after discovering the problem, which it blamed on a changeover in the back-end infrastructure for the app store. On Thursday, Marketplace chief Todd Brix said the issue — which he described as a “hiccup” — had now been resolved.

“We fixed the digital certificate problem and last evening resumed publishing new apps and updates,” Brix wrote on the Windows Phone Developer Blog. “It will take a day or two for the repair to fully deploy and newly-published apps to begin appearing in Marketplace again.”

“If your app was in the process of being published, you don’t need to take any action. We have applied the fix and the app will continue through the certification and publishing workflow as normal,” he told developers.

Microsoft estimated the issue affected a “small percentage of the 100,000-plus apps” on the store.

The issue stopped handsets from installing apps or updates published in the last week, according to Microsoft. It affected phones that had been upgraded to Windows Phone 7.5 from an earlier OS, but apparently not those with the later OS pre-installed.

Earlier in August, Microsoft cut the ribbon on the Windows Phone Dev Center, where developers can build, publish and manage apps for Windows Phone 7.5 as well as for the upcoming Windows Phone 8. The company is gearing up for the release of the updated mobile OS, and is looking to build developer backing as it tries to make headway against Android, iOS and even BlackBerry OS.
